Dark Horizon 4th Edition

Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 4th Edition as the brewery describes it involves Muscovado sugar, coffee that starts of as green beans that are first treated alfa amylase and then mashed before drying and roasting. 7 years since the 1st Edition of Dark Horizon was launched and what a successful series it has been and a great journey for us all who were lucky enough to try all 4 editions.

Black as night in colour with little to no head, that bit that survived the massive 16& alc had a dark brown colour. First aroma impressions were of dark fruits and coffee, chocolate and it smelt boozy. Peeling back the aroma layers there is definitely mocha coffee here with some nice maltiness and vanilla tones. Brown sugar is also there and this must come from the Muscovado sugar that also helped to get the fermented alcohol level so high.

First tastes to hit the tongue are coffee, bitter-sweet chocolate, more dark fruits like prunes and dates and the coffee flavour is really nice and more like an espresso now. Very rich and has a sweet touch but also very dry in the finish which is probably a slight alcohol burn in the end. In the finish which is dry it has some charcoal and in the middle is it thick and very full bodied with lots of coffee and chocolate tones and slightly spiced with vanilla and liquorice.

After the 1st Edition I think this one is the next best in my opinion, it throws a big punch but has so many layers of flavour and even at 16% is a great sipper and a very well constructed Imperial Stout.
