Imperial Stout Barrel Aged 2012

Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout Barrel Aged 2012 is as the name states an aged version of their standard Imperial Stout that we all love so much. Jet black in colour with a brown espresso head. The aroma was in some ways similar to the original Imperial Stout but a bit more boozy, roasted malts, coffee, dried dark fruits like prunes and raisins. There is definitely some wood in the aroma that gives it a slight vanilla to smoky touch and I am guessing oak cask here.

The taste was a bit thinner than what I was expecting, makes it easy to compare with the other Imperial Stout versions tasting the regular and the cognac barrel versions at the same time. Some dark chocolate, roasted coffee and dark fruits, bitterness was perfect and the carbonation was a bit on the high side. Lovely after-taste that was long lasting even though the body was on the thin side for and Imperial Stout. All in all another great beer from Nøgne Ø and I fully understand why they like to experiment with their flag ship Imperial Stout.
