Imperial Stout Cognac Barrel

Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout Cognac Barrel This Imperial Stout has spent one year in oak casks which were previously used for ageing Cognac. Opaque black body with a quite generous mocha brown head where the aroma was of dark chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar and boozy. As with most great Imperial Stout I am getting dried dark fruits, some vanilla, liquorice and molasses.

On the palette I was hit by more bitter dark chocolate, deep roasted coffee beans, some soya sauce more alcohol and some sweetness. Palette is both thick and smooth with very low carbonation and the body is very full-bodied. Very long after-taste with some wood and smokiness, like smoked sausage and lots of dark plums in the finish. The finish was long and quite inky where this beer is a real sipper and one to enjoy on a cold winters night, not sure though if I prefer this cognac very instead of the original Imperial Stout but great to see how different flavours can be brought out by ageing beer. Like this beer a lot but in small doses.
